For the past 53 years, in the United States, Canada and more recently in the United Kingdom - Black History Month (February 1 - March 1). This is the time to remember important events and people of the African Diaspora.

It is very important to learn about history of events and people in the African Diaspora as a lot of wasn’t written in our history textbooks. Many ways of learning is by reading books, watching documentaries or participating in activities online and “outside.”

Here are some ideas to celebrate Black History Month:

  1. Support Black Business - have brunch at a black-owned restaurants, shop black designers, stores, etc.

  2. Learn Black History - a lot of libraries, museums, universities etc., offer showcases, classes and documentaries by authors and artists celebrating Black History Month. There are also offered virtually.

  3. Get Children Involved - create or play games about Black History. For example, create a Jeopardy -like game on Black Engineers.

  4. Get Cultured - take an art, cooking or dance class, showcasing the various art forms within the African Diaspora.

Black History is American History and should be learned by everyone. We all stand on the shoulders of many great Black people who have created, liberated, broke barriers for us all. Honor them by learning of the great strides they took and what they overcame.

Happy Black History Month ❤️🖤💚
